National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS)


 The Central Sector Scheme ‘National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme’ was launched in 2008, after getting approval from CCEA, with the objective to award scholarships to meritorious students of economically weaker sections to arrest their drop out at class VIII and encourage them to continue their education at secondary stage. One lakh fresh scholarships are awarded to selected students of class IX every year and their continuation / renewal in classes X to XII for study in State Government, Government-aided and Local body schools under the scheme. The amount of scholarship is Rs. 12000/- per annum from 1st April 2017 (earlier it was Rs. 6000/- per annum). 

National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) is a Centrally Sponsored Scholarship Scheme of Ministry of Education, Government of India primarily for economically backward but brilliant students at elementary level to curb dropout rate at secondary level. This scheme was started in the year 2008. State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) Solan, Himachal Pradesh is the State nodal agency.  Under this scheme, a student with parental income not more than Rs. 3.5 lakhs and studying in VIII class of Govt./Govt. aided/local body school with 55% (50 % for reserve category) in class VII can appear in the examination conducted by SCERT H.P. in the month of November every year in different centers of all districts of Himachal Pradesh. The number of centers may be increased or decreased according to the need. A total quota of 832 scholarships has been allocated for Himachal Pradesh.

The following steps are involved in the execution of the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS):- 

  • After selection in November NMMS examination, candidates have to register and apply on National Scholarship Portal (NSP) 2.0.
  • After registration and applying on NSP-2.0, verification will happen at institution level, District Level and State Level. 
  • After verification at MHRD Level, Scholarships are disbursed by the State Bank of India directly by electronic transfer into the accounts of students through Public Financial Management System (PFMS). 
  • Scholarship is given to the students for studying in IX, X, XI & XII classes @ of Rs. 1000/- per month provided he/she obtains minimum 60% (55% marks for reserved category) marks in class X for continuation of scholarship in the next higher classes. For continuing the scholarship in class X and XII the awardees should get clear promotion from class IX to classXand from class XI to class XII in their first attempt.
  • The scholarship is discontinued if student shifts to any private aided school or Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV). 
  • Under this scheme 100,000 National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship will be given to the selected meritorious students of the country. 
  • Himachal Pradesh has a quota of 832 scholarships every year.
